The American Geographical Society is an organization of professional geographers and other devotees of geography who share a fascination with the subject and a recognition of its importance. Most Fellows of the Society are Americans, but among them have always been a significant number of Fellows from around the world. The Society encourages activities that expand geographical knowledge, and it has a well-earned reputation for presenting and interpreting that knowledge so that it can be understood and used not just by geographers but by others as well–especially policy makers. It is the oldest nationwide geographical organization in the United States. Its priorities and programs have constantly evolved with the times, but the Society’s tradition of service to the U.S. government, business community, and nation-at-large has continued unchanged. Individuals, corporations, and businesses who wish to support the AGS can join the Galileo Circle or the Humboldt Club.
Established in 1851, the American Geographical Society is the oldest professional geographical organization in the United States. It is recognized world-wide as a pioneer in geographical research and education.
The mission of the American Geographical Society is to link business, professional, and scholarly worlds in the creation and application of geographical knowledge and techniques to address economic, social, and environmental problems. The Society’s work serves to increase geographical knowledge and the recognition of its importance in the contemporary world.
Through its landmark publications, the Geographical Review and FOCUS on Geography magazine, and through assorted consulting and lecture services, the AGS excels in presenting clearly and concisely relevant geographical information that can be understood by the general public as well as by professional geographers.
The AGS has been noted for pioneering work in exploration and cartography; for amassing the foremost geographical research library in the Western Hemisphere; and for research, mapping, and consulting services for government and business at the highest levels. The AGS also sponsors exciting travel programs around the globe, with special lectures by leading geographers.
