The Royal Geographical Society (with The Institute of British Geographers) is the Learned Society representing Geography and geographers. It was founded in 1830 for the advancement of geographical science and has been among the most active of the learned societies ever since. The largest geographical society in Europe, and one of the largest in the world, the RGS-IBG operates at a regional, national and international scale.
The Society supports research, education and training, together with the wider public understanding and enjoyment of Geography. With its focus on society and environment, Geography is one of the most popular subjects in formal education and highly relevant to both life-long learning and fulfilment from travel.
The Society has a membership of approximately 13,300, a world renowned reputation, and a programme of activities which extend far beyond its membership. Over 150 lectures and conferences are organised each year including a major 4-day residential conference, and a renowned programme of popular lectures for the Geography enthusiast. There are three major overseas field research programmes, and a specialist unit, the Expedition Advisory Centre, is devoted to training for younger field scientists. The Society’s information resources include its Library, Map Room and Picture Library. It also regularly publishes three scholarly journals, a research bulletin, a newsletter and a popular magazine. The Society is based in a listed building in its own grounds in Kensington opposite Hyde Park, and operates 8 regional branches in the UK and one overseas. There is a permanent full-time staff of 40, together with part-time, temporary and volunteer staff.
The Society has an annual turnover of approximately ?3.3m, nearly 30% of which is raised from membership subscriptions. Corporate sponsorships amount to a further ?200,000 per annum, and trusts and grants up to ?100,000. Legacy income varies each year but is less than ?50,000 in most years. The remaining income is raised from education, research projects, expedition advice and information resources activities, as well as from the commercial operations and investment income. The Society is seeking to build further its fundraising in the areas of individual donations, trusts and grants, sponsorships, and legacies. In general, the priorities for fundraising will be agreed by the Society’s Council, who will be guided by the recently published Strategic Plan and annual implementation plans.
The Society is incorporated under Royal Charter and is a registered charity (number 208791) with headquarters in central London, at Lowther Lodge in Kensington Gore.
The Society closes over the Christmas period. This year it will be closed from Thursday 23 December at 5.30pm and will reopen on Tuesday 4 January at 9.30am
